20121110 UNC Directions from Asheboro to Kenan Mezzanine etcech

If  game starts at 12:30 might want to plan on being to seats by 11:45/12:00.  Free food available from 11:00 through half time. (Gates open at 11:00)  We will be there between 11:15 and 11:30. I estimate it will  take you between 1 hour and 10 to 1 hour and 25 minutes to get from Asheboro to Parking lot, 20 minutes to walk to Bell Tower - 30 minutes more if you do the Bell Tower Climb and 15 more minutes from Tower to seats. If you go from Parking to Seats would cut out about  45 minutes.
Here are revised directions, Might want  to Print a copy. I am mailing you one. Let me know if you have questions.
Look forward to seeing you soon.

The address for the Parking deck is

Location: Corner of McCauley and Pittsboro Streets

Getting to Parking Lot
1. would plan on one hour and 25 minutes to get to Parking. I did find some notes I made and it took us One Hour and 7 minutes from  Asheboro High School (
9:15 am),  to Siler City (9:40), #15-501 (9:59), Allen and Son BBQ (10:04),Global Parking lot (10:22)
Details:
2a.Come down from Asheboro on 64 to 15-501 around Pittsboro, turn left on 15-501
2b.Continue on  until close to Chapel Hill when you turn left onto NC86/ South Columbia Street, You will be off of 15-501 now.
3.Continue up NC86/ South Columbia Street past hospital (Columbia Street by then is one way the way you are going). You reach McCauley Street  on left at a triangle intersection (with fraternity house on left and old Naval Armory near on right). (McCauley is South Road coming from the right, ie name changes here)
4.Turn left on McCauley.  (Columbia is one way by then  and that is why you cannot go back down it after game.)
5.Soon (100 feet) turn left into the drive to the underground parking deck which is then on right  at back of GLOBAL EDUCATION CENTER Building which is just before the intersection at corner of Pittsboro (no street sign visible) and McCauley Street, As you turn off McCauley you will notice the Carolina Inn construction on right
6.Give the stub from bottom of Parking pass to attendant. Put Parking Pass on rear view mirror while parked. I often find less crowded if go down to a level below the one you come in. There are stairs and  elevator back up.
7.After game you will go back to your car, drive  out of driveway and turn left on McCauley and quick make a left turn on next street which is one way  Pittsboro Street (no street sign) and continue on down until the road merges with the  way you came in on NC NC86, then to 15-501 and back to Asheboro

a.Walk down the Hill on  McCauley Street from the parking deck past fraternity house on right, cross over the triangle intersection, continue walking (Street now is called South Road) toward the Bell tower which will be on the right.
8b At the Bell Tower you can climb up it, maybe 400 steps. A little hard but I can still do it so I bet you can. Have to sign a release form and they put a Pass around your neck which you will return when through. Might be a short line. Around the area near the Bell Tower will be several UNC related tents and even the Ram Mascot for a picture if line not too long. Figure on 30 minutes at least  around here.
9a. To now get to your seats, walk toward Stadium and you should see Gate 3 but your gate is Gate 6 which is 1/4 around stadium to your right. You will go through some wooded area and down some steep steps, by the entrance on your left is the Football Center and Museum (closed), then by the 9 foot statue of Charley Choo Choo Justice who was the best UNC football player ever and played there when your Dad was at UNC. The statue is done by a man from ASHEBORO so you might want to spend a minute or two looking at it and doing pictures and reading the signs. You continue on to the right around the stadium
(past a student gate on the left) up a steep hill (sorry) and on until you get to Gate 6 (South Side) on your left

9b. They will have a line to check bags if you have one, If you do not can still go through that line if shorter or want to stay together.
10. When inside, look to see two big concrete shafts on the right and left near middle of the back of stadium - that is where the elevators are.

.
Go toward the one on right (blue circle in picture). It will be behind a  concession stand. Few people know where it is but you are trying to get on the Mezzanine Elevator.
11.Show you ticket to the nice young man at the elevator and then again when you get to the 3rd floor Mezzanine. When you get off elevator
on 3rd floor turn left (bathrooms are to right) and   our section G will be on the right. They will punch your ticket when you get off elevator.
12.Food will be on several tables so make your self at home. Your seats are on Row B seats 8 7 6 5 in Section G (Might want to visit a bathroom before getting food and going to seats if you want though will be easy any time to get to them). Linda and I will be on Row A in front of you.
these are your seats Blue Circle

Walk to Kenan:
(If NOT stopping at Bell Tower)
8.Walk down McCauley Street from the parking deck, cross over the triangle intersection, continue walking toward the Bell tower. Just before Bell Tower Bush/Grass area there will be a road to the right down a hill toward the stadium. You might see the big statue of the Ram and the one of Choo Choo Justice at bottom of hill nearby.
9.At bottom of hill bear right a little up a hill (past a student gate on the left) and keep going until you get to Gate 6 (South Side) on your left . Enter stadium. They will have a line to check bags if you have one, If you do not can still go through that line if shorter or want to stay together.
10. When inside, bear to the right behind the food concession stand and look for the elevator in that general area. Most folks will not know where it is if you ask  them but keep searching. Before  you get on elevator they will doublecheck your ticket. Ride elevator and if they ask, say third floor or Mezzanine.
11. When leaving elevator on 3rd floor, turn left. (Bathrooms are to right). They will punch your ticket.
12.Our Sec G is on right before long, food will be on tables.

After Game:

To Go home without going Down Town
13. If you do not go downtown, just go out of the seating area  . . .as follows
.The elevator stops running to the public 5 minutes before end of the game as some UNC Coaches need to use. It starts up again maybe 5 minutes after game. You can ride if you want but it is easier and faster to walk down the steps. If you walk, when you leave your seats turn right (opposite way you came in) and go until you see steps going down. Then go out the closest gate to the right (which is the Student gate and not the one you came in) and retrace your steps to the Parking lot.. When in Parking Lot drive out of driveway and turn left on McCauley and soon make a quick left turn on Pittsboro Street (no street sign) and continue on down until the road merges with the  way you came on NC 86/501/15, then back home

14b.Keep walking through campus until you get to Franklin Street and you will see the University Methodist Church and that is on the main street of Franklin. We like the Carolina Coffee Shop as a place to eat and it is near there. There are other restaurants around. Some shops will be open.
14c. When ready to go to car go to and turn left and walk on Columbia Street and eventually you will go by the Carolina Inn and on down to McCauley and back to your parking. Hard to tell all this but take a look at the map and it will help.

14d. When in Parking Lot drive out of driveway and turn left on McCauley and soon make a quick left turn on Pittsboro Street (no street sign) and continue on down until the road merges with the  way you came on NC 86/501/15, then back home

Hi folks
I made the first recording below of " What it was was Football" by Andy with cartoons I found online. The Second one I  did one with photos around Kenan. I want to make another sometime with photos from Kenan to match what Andy says. Let me know if it does not play with the words and slideshow. thanks. Also the words are below.

What It Was, Was Football
September 26, 2002
Andy Griffith in the 50s
Raleigh, NC __ With a bye-week on the schedule, what do we do for two weeks without a game?  Carolina Cathy and I enjoyed a great time with friends and dinner last weekend.  At other times, we can reminisce about the past.
One thing that came to light was our very own Andy Griffith (UNC '49) and his career launching recording of What It Was, Was Football.  For many of us growing up in the 50's, that was one play back on the radio that got our attention.
Has Carolina ever honored Andy at half-time?  After the teams leave the field, crank up What It Was, Was Football on the speakers.  At some point during the recording, have Andy walk out of the Tar Heel's tunnel and towards mid-field.  And have the female cheerleaders encircle him as he walks. Remember: ...these purty girls a-wearin' these little-bitty short dresses, and a-dancin' around.  Then make some sort of presentation by Woody (plaque in bronze relief of 2 hot dogs and a big orange drink, honorary member of football team with ANDY on the back of a jersey...) to honor one of the most famous Tar Heels.
His days at UNC and time spent at Kenan inspired this monologue.  Note the reference to patch of woods and North Gate.  I think it'd be great to see something done like this! ...I do!
After several hours of surfing the Net, I found some graphics depicting that monologue and a link to the recording so you can enjoy it again.

WHAT IT WAS, WAS FOOTBALL

Andy Griffith - 1954

It was back last October, I believe it was.
We was going to hold a tent service off at this college town,
and we got there about dinner time on Saturday.
Different ones of us thought that we ought to get us a mouthful to eat before we set up the tent.
So we got off the truck and followed this little bunch of people
through this small little bitty patch of woods there,
and we came up on a big sign that says, "Get something to Eat Here."

I went up and got me two hot dogs and a big orange drink,
and before I could take a mouthful of that food,
this whole raft of people come up around me and got me to where I couldn't eat nothing, up like,
and I dropped my big orange drink.
Well, friends, they commenced to move, and there wasn't so much that I could do but move with them.

Well, we commenced to go through all kinds of doors and gates and I don't know what- all,
and I looked up over one of 'em and it says, "North Gate."
We kept on a-going through there, and pretty soon we come up on a young boy and he says,
"Ticket, please."
And I says, "Friend, I don't have a ticket;
I don't even know where it is that I'm a-going!"
Well, he says, "Come on out as quick as you can."
And I says, "I'll do 'er; I'll turn right around the first chance I get."

Well, we kept on a-moving through there,
and pretty soon everybody got where it was that they was a-going,
because they parted and I could see pretty good.
And what I seen was this whole raft of people a-sittin' on these two banks
and a-lookin at one another across this pretty little green cow pasture.

Somebody had took and drawed white lines all over it and drove posts in it,
and I don't know what all,
and I looked down there and I seen five or six convicts a running up and down
and a-blowing whistles .
And then I looked down there and I seen these pretty girls wearin' these little bitty short dresses
and a-dancing around, and so I thought I'd sit down and see what it was that was a-going to happen.

About the time I got set down good I looked down there
and I seen thirty or forty men come a-runnin' out of one end of a great big outhouse down there
and everybody where I was a-settin' got up and hollered!
And I asked this fella that was a sittin' beside of me,
"Friend, what is it that they're a-hollerin' for?
Well, he whopped me on the back and he says,
"Buddy, have a drink!" I says,
"Well, I believe I will have another big orange.
I got it and set back down.

When I got there again I seen that the men had got in two little bitty bunches down there
real close together, and they voted.
They elected one man apiece,
and them two men come out in the middle of that cow pasture
and shook hands like they hadn't seen one another in a long time.
Then a convict came over to where they was a-standin',
and he took out a quarter and they commenced to odd man right there!
After a while I seen what it was they was odd-manning for.
It was that both bunchesfull of them wanted this funny lookin little pumpkin to play with.
And I know, friends, that they couldn't eat it because they kicked it the whole evenin'
and it never busted.

Both bunchesful wanted that thing.
One bunch got it and it made the other bunch just as mad as they could be!
Friends, I seen that evenin' the awfulest fight that I ever have seen in all my life !!
They would run at one -another and kick one- another
and throw one another down and stomp on one another
and grind their feet in one another
and I don't know what-
all and just as fast as one of 'em would get hurt,
they'd take him off and run another one on !!

Well, they done that as long as I set there, but pretty soon this boy that had said
"Ticket, please." He come up to me and said,
"Friend, you're gonna have to leave because it is that you don't have a ticket."
And I says, "Well, all right." And I got up and left.

I don't know friends, to this day, what it was that they was a doin' down there,
but I have studied about it.
I think it was that it's some kindly of a contest where they see which bunchful of them men can take that pumpkin and run from one end of that cow pasture to the other without gettin' knocked down or steppin' in somethin'.
