The 1958 Blue Comet football team experienced the most successful season in the history of the school. Asheboro defeated previously undefeated Hickory High School in the WHCHSAA championship game and finished with a 12 and 0 record. Led by the legendary Coach Lee J. Stone, and assisted by Max Morgan, Sal Gero, and Don Thomas, the Blue Comets rolled up 404 points on offense and allowed only 33 points. Recognized by the NCHSAA in 2005 as one of the top 100 high school teams in North Carolina sports history, the 1958 team has many Hall of Famers from all walks of life.
The 1960’s Women’s Basketball Team (2010)
The 1960’s Women’s Basketball Team won Asheboro’s first and only women’s WNCHSAA Championship. The team has been the “talk of the town” for the last 50 seasons, and is still described as one of the best of all time. The team was touted as an experienced, smart group of athletes, with aggressive defenders and deadly shooters, but “short” compared to other teams in the newly formed South Piedmont Conference. The Lady Blue Comets survived a tough, exciting season of close games with overtimes and last second shots. After suffering three early conference losses, they played exceptional basketball earning a 1st place finish. A confident team, The Blue Comets swept three tournament games and captured the North-South Piedmont Tournament, crushing Statesville, 69 to 57. The Blue Comets won their 13th consecutive game overwhelming the much taller, 3 year undefeated Taylorsville team, 67 to 50. Taylorsville, the defending state champs, were no match for the tenacious defensive unit and brilliant shooting Blue Comets-1960 winners of the WNCHSAA Championship.
Members of the team were Coach Angelyn Glisson (deceased), Angela Carpenter Crooks, Wanda McIntrye Hargett McDaniel, Janet Harris, Margie Chrisco Barnes (deceased), Gail Foster Riggs, Gail Harris, Sandy Henry McCombs, Pat Hobson Battle (deceased), Judy Loutrel Ferguson, Mary Jo Olivo Harville, Carol Tillman Bullins, Sandra Niki Underwood, Sue Kearns Rossman, Martha Kivette Bristow, Rudite Preimats Robinson and Betty Pugh Lohr.
The 1986 Baseball Team, 3-A State Champions (2013)
Asheboro High School's baseball team swept South Iredell 2-0 in the best of three series to claim the 1986 3-A State Championship. Timely pitching from Chris Jones, Brian Hayes and Tony Coble and solid play from seniors Jay Foscue, Darrin Floyd, Maurice Butler and others propelled the Blue Comets to a 25-3 record during the 1986 season. Other team members included Philip Perdue, Patrick Dees, Kyle Smith, Mark Shiflet, Phillip Floyd, Stewart Roberts, Robbie Hammonds, Keith Smith, Kent Lewis and Ryan Hammonds. Toby Coble was named Most Valuable Player of the 1986 State Tournament. Asheboro began the season with a 4-3 record and went on to win 21 games straight. Head coach Martin Smith was assisted by Tony McKee and Gary Martin. Coach Smith said, "No doubt there's some excellent talent on this club, but it's hard to measure heart and we've got plenty of that."
DONNA ANDREWS, CLASS OF 1973 (2006)
Donna Andrews contributed significantly to women’s athletics at AHS and North Carolina State University. She was a three time All-Conference basketball player and won the Most Valuable Player award in 1972. Donna also earned three varsity letters for the Blue Comets tennis team. Enrolling at NC State, she was a member of the University women’s club team that was elevated to Division 1 Status under the legendary and present coach, Kay Yow. Andrews was not only a team captain for the Lady Wolf Pack basketball team, but also served in the same capacity for the University volleyball squad. The three year letter winner was named Most Outstanding Senior Player. She was one of the first females at NCSU to receive an athletic scholarship. Donna, the 2005 winner of Top City Employee, continues to use her outstanding skills to help provide quality recreational activities for others by serving as the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director for the city of Hickory.
Roger Barker (Class of 1981) (2011)Roger Barker was an outstanding member of the AHS class of 1981. An outstanding baseball player, he earned all-conference honors for 3 years and was an all-conference member of the AHS cross-country team. While at AHS he was a member of the National Honor Society, the Junior Jaycees, the Interclub Council, and the Monogram Club. Roger attended Wingate University where he continued his career in baseball. A 4-year letterman, he garnered All Carolina Conference honors twice, All District 26 twice, Most Valuable Player, and was named the 1st Academic All-American in any sport at Wingate since its move to a 4-year university status. Roger was awarded the A. J. Geddings Award for the highest GPA of senior athletes and the A. F. Hedrick’s Award for most outstanding male at Wingate. He continued to work with the youth of Asheboro as a coach in the recreation leagues and as a church leader. Roger produced a legacy in which our whole community could take pride. He continues to reside in Asheboro today and is a proud employee of the U.S. Postal Services.
Dustin Bray (Class of 2000) (2011)
Dustin Bray was a four-time all-conference selection in Golf while at Asheboro High School. He was also named three-time Conference Player of the Year, the NCHSAA Regional Champion in 1997, 1998, and 2000.
Dustin won the NCHSAA 3-A Individual State Championships in 1999 and 2000. He continued his career at UNC-CH and was a four-time All Atlantic Coast First Team player. He was named to the 2nd team PING All-American Team in 2002. As the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Individual Tournament Champion, Dustin was recognized as one of the best college players ever. Dustin has competed in five different professional tour divisions with multiple victories on the Tar Heel Tour and multiple top-10 finishes in the EGolf and Nationwide Tours. He continues to play today and still works toward the possibility of becoming a regular on the PGA tour.
CASSANDRA “CISSY” LITTLE BUIE, CLASS OF 1980 (2007)
“Cissy” was one of the most outstanding and successful basketball players at AHS. The 1980 AHS graduate led the Lady Comets to three successful seasons in which she was named to three All-Conference teams, two All-County teams, and selected to the All-State basketball team. Cissy played in the 1980 North Carolina East-West All-Star game and became the first female scholarship winner at Belmont-Abbey. She led the nation in scoring while averaging over 30 points a game and scored over 2600 career points. In 1984, Cissy was selected to try-out for the USA Olympic team. Cissy joins her brother in the 2007 Hall of Fame induction and presently resides in Gastonia, NC.
LARRY BULLA, CLASS OF 1956 (2014)
Bulla was an All-Conference performer in baseball and basketball. An All-Star selection in basketball, he was selected captain in the East/West All-Star Classic. Bulla attended Elon College on a basketball scholarship. He also played five years with the Cleveland Indians Organization in professional baseball. A great sportsman, Bulla continues to serve the Asheboro Community in various organizations.
ROBERT L. BURROWS, CLASS OF 1950 (2007)
In the storied history of AHS athletic programs, there may be no “best player” in any particular sport. Robert L. Burrows was clearly the best interior lineman in his football era. A 1950 graduate of AHS, he was named to the All-Conference team as well as All-State. Robert was the MVP of the Optimist Bowl in 1950. After high school, he was All-ACC, All-State, and named to numerous All-American teams in 1952-1953 at Duke University. Robert entered the Air Force where he continued to play service ball and was named to the All-Air Force team. He was inducted into the Duke University Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Robert is retired as a general sales manager for a paper company and continues to be active in many civic organizations in Raleigh, NC.
Bedford Cannon Class of 1964 (2009)
Bedford was an outstanding football player during the early 1960s at Asheboro High School. During his tenure, Mr. Cannon was named to two All-Conference teams, the All-State team, and played in both the East/West and Shrine Bowl All-Star games. He also served as captain of the basketball team his senior year. Bedford attended Duke University on a football scholarship. He continues to chair the Iredell County Bar Association and serves on many other civic organizations in Statesville, NC.
CHARLIE CHAPMAN, CLASS OF 1967 (2004)
Charlie Chapman was an outstanding team player in football, basketball, and track. He was All-Conference in football, co-captain of the basketball team, and tri-captain of the track team. He was a member of a WNCHSAA state title team in football. After graduating from Western Carolina University, he began a career in coaching. He returned to AHS and served in many capacities. He was an assistant football and basketball coach. As a Student Activities Coordinator, he helped to make AHS a statewide recognized sports program. Coach Chapman continues to assist the Blue Comets as a testing assistant and loyal fan.
Tony Coble Class of 1986 (2009)
An outstanding citizen and athlete, Tony Coble excelled in baseball and football. A 1986 member of the WNCHSAA state champions in baseball, he was named All-State, as well as the state’s 3-A Baseball Player of the Year. Tony was also named All-Conference in football and continued his baseball career at Wingate University. This Mr. Blue Comet of 1986 earned the Player of the Year award, as well as All-American honors in 1990. Tony was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and is a U.S. Army veteran.
CRANDEL COLTRANE (Class of 1991) (2012)
“Play ball”! These were words that Crandel Coltrane loved to hear. The 1991 honor graduate of Asheboro High School was very busy with academics, baseball, and band. Crandel was named to the All-Conference team (Piedmont Athletic Conference) three times as a catcher and twice to the All-Randolph County baseball team. A natural and talented hitter, he was named to the 1991 All-State team. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Crandel was also awarded the Lee J. Stone Sportsmanship Award and was named Conference Player of the Year (PAC) in the spring of 1991. Crandel signed an athletic scholarship to play baseball at UNC-Chapel Hill and was an Honorable Mention All-Freshman by Collegiate Baseball and a winner of the Most Dedicated Award for two seasons. A four-year starter at first base, Crandel still feels nostalgic when he hears the song, “Put Me in Coach, I’m Ready to Play.” This 1996 UNC-CH graduate is married to Jessica Cramer Coltrane and they have two children. Crandel works for the Healthcare Services Group.
DR. DAVID DALTON, CLASS OF 1959 (2006)
Dr. Dalton was a very talented athlete in football and wrestling. Serving as co-captain of the famed 1958 team, he anchored the defense of the WNCHSAA champions which allowed only thirteen points in thirteen undefeated contests. The 1958 team has been recognized as one of the most outstanding teams ever in North Carolina history. This 1958 Mr. Blue Comet was named to the NC Shrine Bowl team, the East-West All-Star team, and also selected to the high school All-American team. Dalton was also an outstanding wrestler. He was the individual NC state champion in his respective weight class his junior year and runner-up state champion his senior year. He continued his education and athletic career at Duke University. Dalton returned to AHS in the 1963 – 1964 school year to teach and coach wrestling. After completing his Doctoral degree at Duke, Dr. Dalton opened an orthopedic medical practice in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He has retired and lives in Megget, SC.
JB DAVIS, CLASS OF 1962 (2008)
An outstanding baseball player, JB was twice selected all conference and was named honorable mention all state in 1962. He signed and played in the Milwaukee braves organization in 1963 and played until an injury cut his career short. Realizing that education was important, JB finished his degree at East Carolina University. He would eventually joined Stuart furniture and was a catalyst in making what is known as Klaussner furniture/Klaussner home furnishing. He has chaired and been involved in numerous charitable groups in Asheboro and Randolph County. JB is an inspiration and a perfect example of giving back to his community.
ANGIE GLISSON, COACH (2004)Angie served as a coach and teacher at AHS for 20 years. She led the Lady Blue Comets to numerous conferences championships in basketball and to a state title in 1960. She also served as director of the City of Asheboro Summer Playground Program. Coach Glisson was a very caring person for all students at AHS. Her efforts laid the ground work for the present day women’s athletic programs at AHS.
GAIL “GAILBO” HARRIS, CLASS OF 1961 (2004)
“Gailbo” was truly ahead of her time. She led AHS to a state title in 1960 while scoring 45 points in the championship game. An All-State selection, Harris once scored 57 points in a game. Although softball was not a school sponsored sport, Gail Harris was very well known for her play. After graduating from college, she continued to work in education and was an award winning principal. She retired in 2003.
WARREN HAWKINS, COACH (2006)
Warren Hawkins was the head basketball coach at AHS from 1947 to 1948 and assistant football coach for the legendary Lee J. Stone. His basketball teams won two WNCHSAA titles in back to back years (1953-1954; 1954-1955) and four consecutive conference titles. This Appalachian State University graduate starred in both football and basketball. Coach Hawkins played for the McCrary Eagles basketball team from 1947 to 1953. His thirty-six years in education included stints as a teacher, a principal at Lindley Park Elementary School and Albemarle High School, and assistant superintendent in the Albemarle system. Coach Hawkins was not just a coach; he was a friend, a mentor and a teacher. Hawkins currently resides in Albemarle, NC.
SHELBY HAYDEN (Class 0f 1978) (2012)
Shelby Hayden is a true pioneer in women’s sports at Asheboro High School as well as an early female triathlete and endurance cycler of the 1980’s and 1990’s. She was a member of the first female softball team at AHS in 1977 and was a member of the men’s cross-country team and an All-Conference performer on the first women’s Blue Comet track team in 1978. Shelby was the first ever winner of the Miss Blue Comet Award in 1978. After attending college in Hawaii she began to train in endurance running and cycling events. Shelby entered the Hawaiian Triathlon in 1984 and finished in the top 20 for three consecutive years. This Iron Man competition includes a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike races, and a 26.2 run. This competition led to more endurance type biathlons and bike races. Shelby entered and won the “Race Across America” in 1984 (3047 miles). She also completed and won a 620 mile “Murphy to Manteo” race and broke the existing record in 1984. This Asheboro High School graduate was the winner of numerous events during the 80’s and 90’s. Some of these events include: the Stone Mountain 50 mile run (1991); the Arkansas Traveler 100 mile run (1991); Grandfather Mountain Marathon Champion (1983); and the 1984 Spenco 500 mile bike winner in Waco Texas . Shelby was the 1984-85 North Carolina Triathlete of the Year and the 1985 N.C. Lung Association spokesperson. She resides in Asheboro, N.C.
Randy Henderson (Class of 1975) (2011)
Randy “Hindu” Henderson was an outstanding three sport athlete at Asheboro High School. A five time all- conference winner in football, baseball, and basketball; Randy was named the most outstanding football player on the football team in 1974 and was a star as a 1st baseman on the 1975 state baseball champions of the WNCHSAA. This Mr. Blue Comet of 1975 also was awarded the Bobby Bulla Memorial Award, the Philip W. McNulty Award, and the Tim Howell Memorial Scholarship Award. Randy attended Mars Hill College where he played football and was a four-year letterman for the baseball team. Randy has been a resident of Fort Myers, Florida for the past 31 years and is the proud father of 3 children. He has been involved in banking and served as president of a real estate company, the Corbin Henderson Company. Randy continued his interest in sports by coaching many little league football and baseball teams in Florida. Randy and his wife Ginny continue to live in Fort Myers and he currently serves as Mayor of this striving community.
Ronnie Hinson Class of 1959 (2009)
Ronnie Hinson was and is considered to be one of the most outstanding hitters to play for Asheboro High School. He also excelled in football and basketball. Ronnie was a starting fullback and defensive tackle on the 1959 WNCHSAA state championship team. He also was a co-captain and All-Conference performer in basketball that won conference and the WNCHSAA state championship. A four year starter and All-Conference performer, Mr. Hinson led Asheboro High School and American Legion Post 45 teams deep into the play-offs each year. His career batting average topped the .500 mark. Ronnie signed with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1959 and played in the Mid-West league and the Western North Carolina League. He was selected as the Topps Player of the Month in July, 1961. Mr. Hinson worked for thirty years with Union Carbide in Asheboro.
CHARLES HODGES, CLASS OF 1969 (2004)
Not only did Hodges excel in football for the Blue Comets, he was a tremendous track athlete as well. An All-Conference performer in football, Hodges rushed for over 1000 yards in each of his three seasons. He was a champion long jumper and sprinter. Hodges is a 1973 graduate of Winston-Salem State University.
He continues to be a leader in the community and finds time to officiate high school football.
NEAL HUGHES, CLASS OF 1964 (2004)
During his career at AHS, Neal Hughes excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. A tailback in football, Neal helped guide AHS to a state title in 1963 and runner-up titles in 1962 and 1964. He was selected to play in the East/West All-Star game and later played at East Carolina University. Neal was All-Southern Conference and was listed on many All-American teams. After returning to Asheboro he continued to serve on many civic organizations and was a member of the Asheboro City Schools Board of Education. Neal Hughes is a true Blue Comet.
DAVID “CHICKEN” JARRELL, CLASS OF 1951 (2004)
David Jarrell was included in Lee J. Stone’s list of the 20 best players he ever coached. He was an Honorable Mention All-state performer who helped Asheboro to the South Piedmont Conference Championship. Jarrell was also an outstanding third baseman. A 25 year manager for Carolina Power and Light Company, David continues to display his leadership qualities as being the present Mayor of Asheboro.
LEE JOHNSON, CLASS OF 1963 (2008)
“The Leroy” was an outstanding two sport athlete at AHS. He was named to the 1962 all state football team and participated in the east-west all star game. Lee was a four year captain and starter at Elon College and was named to many all conference teams. He also was selected to play in the east-west shrine all star college bowl game. He continued to play after graduation and was named to the all-navy team in 1969/1970. An avid blue comet supporter, Lee Johnson continues to attend many AHS football, basketball, and baseball games.
RONNIE JOHNSON. CLASS OF 1964 (2004)
Johnson was named to the All-State baseball team in 1964. He was also an All- Conference performer in basketball and football, and was a member of the 1963 WNCHSAA championship football team. Johnson was a three sport letterman at Asheboro high school and named “Mr. Blue Comet.” He attended Louisburg College and Atlantic Christian where he starred in both baseball and basketball.
WELDON CLARKSON “SPARKY” JOHNSON, Class of 1966 (2005)
Johnson was a talented athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. He was named All-Conference in basketball and baseball his junior and senior years; and All-Conference in football his senior year. Upon graduation, he attended The University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he played basketball and baseball. He served two years in the military, followed by two years with the Cleveland Indians minor league baseball team. Mr. Johnson has coached little league and served as an umpire. He is retired from the Asheboro Fire Department.
GEORGE WILLIAM “BILL” JOYNER, JR., Class of 1962 (2005)
Bill Joyner embodied the Blue Comet spirit and helped the Comets win the 1961 3-A State Championship in basketball. In 1962 he was the captain of the basketball team and again led the team to the championship. That same year he was named Most Valuable Player of the East/West All Star game. Mr. Joyner also played on the AHS Golf Team, winning the 3-A State Championship in 1961. After graduation, he attended Wake Forest University where he was a three-year letterman (1964-66) in basketball and played in three ACC Basketball tournaments. In 1969 Mr. Joyner went to work for Wake Forest University, where he remained until 1999. He retired as the Senior Vice President of University Development.
MARK LEGGETT, CLASS OF 1959 (2004)
Leggett was MVP of the legendary 1958 football team that was undefeated and is one of the greatest players in NC history. An All-State performer in football, he also was a state champion in wrestling. Mark received a scholarship to Duke University and received All-ACC and All-American honors. An outstanding business leader, Mark Leggett’s name still conjures memories of his galloping down the field for another Blue Comet touchdown.
THOMAS “TOMMY” LEWIS, CLASS OF 1964 (2005)
Lewis is synonymous with tennis. As a young athlete in the early sixties, Lewis was the number one seed his sophomore, junior and senior years at Asheboro High School. He was a semi-finalist his junior year and finalist his senior year in the WNCHSAA Championship. Upon graduation, Mr. Lewis attended Pfeiffer University where he continued to excel in tennis, winning the NAIA District 26 Doubles Championship in 1966. Mr. Lewis has earned numerous tennis titles during his 45 years playing the sport. However, one of his greatest accomplishments has been coaching tennis at Asheboro High School. Mr. Lewis was selected as the Men’s Tri-County Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2001 he received the A.J. “Tony” Simeon Courage Award by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
RONALD “CHUB” LITTLE, CLASS OF 1979 (2007)
A three sport athlete for the Blue Comets, Little was an outstanding baseball player. He was recognized as All- country and All- conference in both baseball and football and was named to the All- State baseball team his senior year. Chub holds an interception record in football with 12. He also led Post 45 to a dramatic seven game series in American Legion baseball over Hamlet in 1978. Upon graduation, Chub was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds baseball organization in 1979 and continued a seven year career that included stints with a major league franchise team. He continues today to be involved in area youth league teams. Chub and his sister “Cissy” arguably form the most outstanding brother/ sister athletic combination in AHS history.
WANDA MCINTRYE HARGETT MCDANIEL, CLASS OF 1960 (2008)
“Wanda Mac” was an outstanding athlete at AHS and continues to excel in the NC senior games with many medals. She helped lead AHS to a state title in basketball and was named as the best team player while playing the guard position. Although softball was not a sponsored school sport, Wanda was named to the all state team as a catcher for the Asheboro rockets fast pitch softball team which won two state titles and placed second nationally. She continues to give by volunteering for many civic organizations.
JOHNNY MCQUEEN, CLASS OF 1977 (2008)
Johnny was responsible for the resurgence of AHS in the 1970’s. He was the leader on teams which won two conference championships, one WHCHSAA state runner-up title and one WHCHSAA state championship. Johnny was a two time all conference player and the 1976 player of the year. An east-west all-star selection, he led his varsity teams to a 69 wins and 5 losses record including a 43 game win streak. He followed his high school career with a standout stint at High Point College.
Derek McKee (Class of 1999) (2010)
Derek McKee is the epitome of what one would hope that an Asheboro Blue Comet would be. He established himself as a leader on the athletic field and in the classroom, maintaining a 4.156 GPA. Derek was a MVP winner in both basketball and baseball. He was named to four all-conference teams and played in the East-West All-Star game in basketball. Derek attended N.C. State on a baseball scholarship and graduated in 2003. He continues to give back to the community of Asheboro by volunteering his time coaching youth sports and spending time with his wife, Gina and new son, Colton.
Michael Massey (Class of 2000) (2010)An Asheboro High School graduate of 2000, Michael Massey was outstanding both in the athletic arena as well as in the classroom. His 4.6 GPA was near the top of his class. Michael was a honor student, a basketball player, and a two-time State 3-A Champion in the high jump. He won the 1999 and 2000 individual title and still holds the AHS record at 6’10” while participating in other numerous events. Mr. Massey continued his academic and athletic career at Georgia Tech and won All-ACC Honors and was an ACC Champion in indoor and outdoor track, jumping over 7 feet. The 2005 Georgia Tech graduate in Industrial and System Engineering works in Washington, D.C. and continues to give back to the community in numerous civic and volunteer organizations.
CRAIG NORMAN MOODY, CLASS OF 1999 (2007)
Craig not only lettered in football, baseball, track, and swimming, but was named to eleven All-Conference teams. He was a state finalist for four years in swimming and twice in track. This Mr. Blue Comet winner also received the Edward L. Hedrick III award at AHS and was named the North Carolina Wendy’s Heisman Award winner. Craig attended North Carolina State University on an athletic scholarship where he played both football and baseball. He joins both his father, David and uncle, Darrell Moody, members of the 2004 AHS Sports Hall of Fame. Craig works with the Cintas Corporation and resides in Nashville, TN.
DARRELL MOODY, CLASS OF 1966 (2004)
Darrell Moody was the talk of the town in the 1960’s. He led AHS to two WNCHSAA football titles. An All-American in football, he was also All-State in baseball and lettered in basketball. He received a scholarship to NC State University. After graduation he returned to coach and teach at AHS. Moody continued to coach 27 years in the NCAA at various programs. He now serves as a scout for the NFL’s San Diego Chargers.
DAVID MOODY, CLASS OF 1973 (2004)
An All-State selection in both football and baseball, David followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Darrell. Moody played both football and baseball at NC State. He has also served as head coach in both football and baseball at AHS. This former “Mr. Blue Comet” not only played in the East/West All-Star game, but also was selected to coach in the game. David Moody served as an administrator at AHS and is currently the principal at Jordan Matthews High School.
Gary Moody (Class of 1973) (2010)
Gary was an outstanding baseball and football player at Asheboro High School in the early 1970’s. He starred as an offensive and defensive end in football and excelled as an infielder and pitcher in baseball. An all-conference player in both sports, Gary accepted an athletic scholarship to Wake Forest. A four year player, Mr. Moody handled punting duties and played defensive end. He also played baseball for Wake Forest his junior and senior season. Gary Moody lettered in two sports at an ACC school which is very rare. He continued to help youth in Raleigh and Asheboro by coaching recreation sport teams. Gary Moody passed away in May of 1993.
MIKEY MOODY, CLASS OF 1982 (2008)
Mikey Moody has been labeled as one of the “best athletes” to ever attend AHS. A two time all conference player in both basketball and baseball, he was also named to the All-State baseball team and was an Honorable Mention Mcdonalds All-American winner in basketball. As a senior he chose to play football and was named all conference. He helped guide the blue comets to conference championships in football, basketball, and baseball in 1982. He continued his career in baseball and basketball at Pfeiffer College where he garnered All-Conference honors in both sports.
Eben C. (Jr.) Morgan Class of 1952 (2009)
Eben C. Morgan excelled in both football and basketball in the late 1940s and early 1950s at Asheboro High School. A four year letterman in football, Junior was named to the All-Conference and All-State basketball teams as a senior. He received an athletic scholarship to Duke University and was a ferocious rebounder and still is listed in many individual records today. After graduation he joined the Pickard China Co. and rose to CEO. Pickard China was selected by the U.S. Department of State to manufacture the official china used by American embassies and is found on Air Force One currently. “Junior” Morgan passed away in June, 2008.
MAX MORGAN, COACH (2004)
Max Morgan was an All-State football player at AHS in 1943. After coaching at Randleman High School, Coach Morgan returned to Asheboro in 1960 to assist Lee J. Stone and was involved with numerous sports. He was selected to be head football coach in 1967 until 1974. Max continued to serve as A.D. until his retirement in 1988. He was selected Region 5 Athletic Director the following year. Coach Morgan was very instrumental in the lives of many students who still serve the Asheboro community. He passed away in 2003.
RUSS MURPHY, COACH (2004)
Coach Murphy was a long time coach of numerous sports in the Asheboro City School System. A graduate of Winston Salem State University, he played football professionally with the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach Murphy is a very passionate person who has touched many students and athletes in the 30 plus years that he lived in the Asheboro Community. He continues to be a loyal supporter of our many athletic teams today.
MIKE OLIVO, CLASS OF 1963 (2008)
Mike’s exceptional ability, fierce competitive spirit, strong leadership and drive for excellence exemplified his career. a two time state champion in wrestling, he earned an outstanding career record of 86 wins and 11 losses. Mike also excelled in football and participated in the 1st boys home all star bowl game in 1963. After attending Appalachian state university on a wrestling scholarship, Coach Olivo returned to coach wrestling and produced numerous WHCHSAA individual state champions at AHS. He later moved to Reidsville and continued to coach and teach. With a life long commitment to young people and sports, the 1963 Mr. Blue Comet continues to officiate in football, baseball and wrestling after retiring from 30 years of teaching.
RED O’ QUINN, CLASS OF 1943 (2004)
Red O’ Quinn was truly a pioneer. A letterman in football and baseball, O’Quinn won many awards in basketball at Asheboro high school. After being discharged in the Navy in 1946, he enrolled at Wake Forest where he played basketball and football. He led the nation in pass receiving and was drafted by the Chicago Bears. After a short stint in the NFL, O’Quinn became a legend for the Montreal Allouettes. He has been inducted in both the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He is deceased.
Merceda Perry, Jr. (Class of 1997) (2011)
Merceda Perry, Jr. was an outstanding student/athlete at Asheboro High School. He excelled in track, basketball, and football. Merceda won all-county and all-conference in all three sports and was a 1st Team All-State selectee in football in 1997. As a senior, he rushed for over 1500 yards from the fullback position, made 487 career tackles as a linebacker and won State Champion Honors in the discus. He earned a scholarship in football to UNC-CH and played in Carolina’s Gator Bowl and Las Vegas Bowl appearances. He earned a B.S. in Exercise Sports Science, a master’s in Business Administration and is currently working on his PhD in Physical Therapy. He continued his playing career with stints in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, the Buffalo Bills, and NFL Europe. Merceda also found time to be a volunteer with the Big Brother’s Big Sister’s program and the Hosea Feed the Hungry foundation of Atlanta. He currently resides in Wilmington, NC and is newly married to the former Johnetta Hayes.
JOHN FREDERICK PHILLIPS, CLASS OF 1973 (2005)
Phillips contributed significantly to the establishment of the track and cross-country teams at AHS. As a sophomore in 1971, AHS did not have a suitable track for competitions. In 1972, Phillips spoke to the Asheboro City Board of Education as they considered constructing an all-weather track. The track was approved and remains in use today. Also, in 1972 the WCNHSAA added a cross-country program for interested schools. AHS Athletic Director Bill Adkins told Phillips if he could recruit at least ten team members, AHS would provide uniforms and a coach. Phillips was undefeated in track his junior and senior years, and undefeated in all eight regular season cross-country meets. He was voted “Most Valuable Player” his senior year in track and cross-country. Following high school he attended NC State University where he continued to run track and cross-country. In 1977 he served on the Asheboro Parks and Recreation Committee that organized the first Fall Festival 10K Road Race.
RONALD KEITH PUGH, CLASS OF 1974 (2007)
Ronnie Pugh starred in three sports at AHS. He was a three year starter for the Blue Comets in football, basketball, and baseball. This Mr. Blue Comet winner served as a captain in each of these three sports while being named as All-Conference three consecutive years in baseball. After graduation, Ronnie attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory and stared in both football and baseball all four years. While being involved in the day to day operation of Pugh Oil Co., he has continued to take part in coaching several youth teams and is presently coach of the state finalist American Legion Post 45 team baseball team. Ronnie serves in various civic organizations throughout the community.
DON REDDING, CLASS OF 1955 (2004)
Redding was an All-State performer in basketball and a member of the 1955 WNCHSAA champions. He was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl for football. Redding was a three year starter in football at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was drafted by the NFL Chicago Bears in 1959. He pursued a career in finance and served in many different capacities in numerous civic organizations. A devoted family man, Don remains very active in the Rams Club at UNC-Chapel Hill.
SCOTT RUSH, CLASS OF 1970 (2004)
Scott Rush was a three-sport letterman. He was All-Conference in football and baseball. Scott played in the East/West Boys Home All-Star football game. He attended Elon College and excelled in both football and baseball. After graduation, Scott returned home and opened a very successful sporting goods store. He was also a founding member of the Blue Comet Booster Club. The former “Mr. Blue Comet” passed away in 1996, but his spirit continues to be a large part of Blue Comet athletics.
CHARLES T. “CHARLIE” ROBBINS, CLASS OF 1941 (2005)
Robbins is known in Asheboro as “Mr. Baseball.” While at AHS he played baseball and football. Robbins is most well known for his association with the American Legion Baseball, where he coached his team to the state championship in 1966. He has subsequently been inducted into the National American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. After graduating from AHS, Robbins attended Elon College where he had a notable athletic career. Mr. Robbins is a lifelong Asheboro resident, an avid Blue Comet supporter, and was a long time color analyst for WKXR Radio during baseball season. He served on the Asheboro City Council and is past-president of the Golden K Kiwanis Club.
Jerry Rowe Class of 1960 (2009)
The late Jerry Rowe was another tremendous football player in the late 1950s at Asheboro High School. Jerry was a member of the 1958 state championship team that has been recognized as one of the best all-time teams in North Carolina. He was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and was named All-State, as well as All-American. Jerry Rowe was awarded on athletic scholarship to UNC and later played at Elon College and was named to the Little All-American team his senior season.
STEVE RUMMAGE (Class of 1966) (2012)
Steve “Rooster” Rummage was an outstanding athlete and football player at Asheboro High School. A tremendous defensive player, Steve helped to lead Asheboro High to State Western North Carolina High School football championships in 1963 and 1965. He was named to the All-Conference teams in both his junior and senior years. This All-State player (1965) also was selected and played in the 1965 NC/SC Shrine Bowl Game and the 1966 East-West All-Star contest. Steve signed an athletic scholarship in 1966 to attend N.C. State University and continued to star as a defensive end. The 1971 graduate won the Coaches Merit Award and was named MVP of the North Carolina State Wolfpack his senior year. Steve is a successful businessman and continues to reside in Hartwell, Georgia.
Harris Sanders (Class of 1945) (2010)
Harris “Fuzzy” Sanders achievements’ as an athlete at Asheboro High School are second to none. Mr. Sanders earned 12 varsity letters starting in football, baseball and basketball. He was an inspiration and hero to many Blue Comet Hall of Famers. “Fuzzy” earned numerous all-conference and all-state honors in all three sports. To this day, many people of Asheboro still talk about Harris as one of the “best athletes” to ever attend Asheboro High School. Mr. Sanders turned down many scholarship offers and enlisted in the Navy. Thru the years, Harris has been involved in many civic and volunteer efforts in the city of Asheboro.
John Schwarz (Class of 1964) (2010)
John Schwarz was an outstanding football and track athlete at Asheboro High School. He was a member and outstanding lineman on the 1963 WNCHSAA championship team. An outstanding school and team leader, Mr. Schwarz was named to numerous all-conference and all-state teams during his junior and senior years. John continued his education and playing career at East Carolina University. He was named to the All-Southern Conference Team both as an offensive and defensive lineman. He returned to Asheboro in the late 1960’s and served as a volunteer for Coach Lee J. Stone. John Schwarz resides in Greensboro and continues to volunteer in animal rights legislation.
Mark Sink, Class of 1966 (2013)
Mark Sink was an exceptional football and baseball player in the 1960s at AHS. The 1966 Blue Comet graduate was a starting halfback for the football team in 1964 and '65 and an All-State centerfielder on the 1966 baseball team. Mark was also a member of the 1966 State Championship American Legion Post 45 team. He went on to play baseball at Gardner-Webb College and was named to the 1968 National Junior College Athletic Association All-American team. Sink continued his baseball career at Pembroke University. He was recruited by the California Angels but declined a signing bonus to complete his degree. Upon graduation from Pembroke, Sink played baseball in Virginia's Valley League until an injury ended his career. He currently serves as the pastor of Lankford Memorial Baptist Church in Greensboro. Mark and his wife Sally live in Thomasville.
JOE SPINKS, CLASS OF 1990 (2006)
Joe Spinks was a tremendous basketball player and greatly admired by all. A prolific scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker, Joe was named the Randolph County Player of the Year both his junior and senior years. He was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the conference and led the Blue Comets to the NCHSAA regional championship game. Joe received an athletic scholarship to Campbell University. He was named the Big South All-Conference Rookie of the Year in 1991,named to three Big South All-Conference teams, and was the MVP of the team his senior year. Mr. Spinks played twelve successful and rewarding years in the European Professional Basketball League. He has just been named as the head coach of the Demon Astronauts that are based in Amsterdam, Holland.
Chuckie Simmons, Class of 1987 (2013)
Chuckie Simmons is one of the most decorated track athletes to have walked the halls of Asheboro High School. During his high school career, he was a two-time All-American in track, 1986 3-A State Champion in the 100-meter dash, and was a member of the 1987 3-A State Champion 4 x 200 relay team. Simmons was also an All-Conference running back for the Asheboro High School football team. Upon graduation, Simmons attended St. Augustine's University where he was a member of the 4 x 100 Division II National Championship relay team. He continued his collegiate career at North Carolina State University. At N.C. State, Simmons won conference championships in both indoor and outdoor long jump events. His performances at N.C. State still rank in the top 25 in school history in the 55 and 100 meter races, the 4 x 100 meter relay, and long jump events. Simmons is head coach of the South Asheboro Middle School track team and he works with local athletes as a track and speed training coach.
MARTIN SMITH, CLASS OF 1961 (2006)
Martin Smith has spent a total of 45 years of his life in the Asheboro City School systems. At AHS he lettered in both baseball and basketball. He was selected to All-conference, All- Tournament, All-State, and East/West All-Star team while participating in these sports. He was a starter for three conference championship teams and a state runner-up team (1958) (WNCHSAA) in basketball. Upon graduation he attended Catawaba College where he started in both basketball and baseball. He returned to teach and coach at AHS. He coached twenty-eight conference championship teams, fourteen tournament championship teams and two state championship (WNCHSAA) teams in three sports: cross-country, baseball and basketball. His teams recorded more than 1,150 victories and he was honored a total of twenty-five times as Conference Coach of the Year. After thirty-three years of teaching and coaching, Martin Smith retired in 2004.
REITZEL SMITH (Class of 1932) (2012)
Reitzel Smith may be the “Unsung Hero” of Asheboro High School athletics. He is a 1932 graduate of AHS, a three year letterman in football, a three year letterman in basketball and served as a manager of the baseball team. Mr. Smith was a visionary who truly admired the educators and life skills he learned as a student and athlete in the early 1930’s. He and a fellow student originated the “Blue Comet” name for Asheboro High School in 1931. Thirty-five years after his graduation, Reitzel was elected Chairman of the Asheboro City School system and strived for our system “to be the best.” Reitzel was a successful businessman in the 1940’s and continued to support AHS athletics and academics. He was instrumental in recruiting the legendary and future N.C. Hall of Fame football coach Lee J. Stone to come to Asheboro High School in 1950. The present day stadium, Lee J. Stone Stadium was one of Reitzel Smith’s prized projects. Reitzel was the founder and owner of Sheraton Finance Corporation in Asheboro. Some of the offices and positions he held include President of the Kiwanis Club; Chairman of Directors of the First National Bank; Corporate Board of the Randolph Hospital; Chairman of the Asheboro Airport; and a member of the North Carolina Railroad Commission. He was married to the late Mary Covington Smith. Their two daughters and son all attended Asheboro City Schools. Reitzel Smith passed away in July of 1996. As one former mayor of Asheboro said, “If Reitzel Smith got behind something it would happen. And that is really good!” The 1932 Ash-Hi-Life stated, “True and sincere, loyal and kind-you’ll seldom find another like Reitzel.”
LEE J. STONE, COACH (2004)Coach Stone accepted the position as head football coach at Asheboro High School in 1949. He won three Western North Carolina High School Activities Association Championships at AHS in 1950, 1958, and 1965. Stone coached 29 consecutive seasons without a losing record; was a two-time head coach in the NC Shrine Bowl, past president of the NC Coaches Association and inducted into the NC Sports Hall of Fame and the NC High School Sports Hall of Fame. His service to students did not end when he retired from coaching; he served on the Asheboro City Board of Education for 22 years. Coach Stone was one of the greatest teachers and coaches in North Carolina history.
Morris Thomas Class of 1961 (2009)
Morris Thomas was a true “Mr. Blue Comet.” Not only was Morris All-Conference and All-State in football, he was an outstanding wrestler. He was twice elected class president during his tenure at Asheboro High School. This MVP of the 1960 football squad was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and received an athletic scholarship to Auburn University in Alabama to play football. He finished his playing career at Elon College. Mr. Thomas is deceased.
BRUCE VONCANNON, CLASS OF 1972 (2006)
Bruce was an outstanding tennis and basketball player, as well as student government president. He was the singles champion of the WNCHSAA in 1971 and singles runner-up in 1972. Bruce was also a state champion twice and runner-up twice in the North Carolina state age group championships. He also played point guard in basketball and was AHS Defensive Player of the Year and won the Scholar Athlete Award in 1972. Upon graduation, Voncannon attended Princeton University. His collegiate career included three consecutive Ivy League and eastern intercollegiate titles and the Princeton team being ranked as high as number seven in the country. He played on the European satellite tour and participated in ATP tennis in Asia. He also served as the national coach for the republic of China-Taiwan and led them to their first ever Davis Cup victory in 1979. Bruce currently works as the executive director in UBS Financial Service Group based in Geneva, Switzerland. He resides beside Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
BENNY VONCANNON, CLASS OF 1958 (2008)
Benny was an outstanding athlete at Asheboro High School. He excelled in basketball, baseball, and football. He was a four year start in baseball, three year starter in football, and a 2 year starter in basketball. Benny was named twice to the All-State football team as well as being selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and East/West All-Star football contest. He attended UNC-CH on a football scholarship. Benny played in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization after college. He returned to Asheboro and joined his family in the trucking business. Benny continued to help the youth by coaching both basketball and baseball in the recreation programs. He passed away in 2003.
LACY TORY WEST, JR., CLASS OF 1959 (2005)
West was an avid ball player throughout his life and excelled in basketball and baseball. He lettered in both sports and led the way to conference championships in both. He pitched several no-hitters in baseball and averaged more than 20 points a game in basketball. He was named All-Tournament in basketball, and received the Junior Sportsman of the Year award. West went on to attend East Carolina University where he continued to play baseball and basketball. In 1961 and 1963 he helped lead the Pirates to win the NAIA championship. After college, West played on the Cincinnati Reds farm team and transferred to the San Diego Padres in 1965. West was inducted as a charter member of the ECU Hall of Fame in 1974. Professionally, he was a teacher and coached for several years and then entered the insurance business. West passed away in 1999 at the age of 58, leaving a wife, three children, and six grandchildren
STAWBERRY WHELESS, CLASS OF 1960 (2004)
The “Strawberry Blonde Passing Wizard” quarterbacked the Blue Comets from 1957 thru 1959. He helped guide the 1958 team to the WNCHSAA state title and the Blue Comets were 30-4 with “Strawberry” at quarterback. After a one year stint at VPI, he transferred to Elon where he still ranks very high in many passing categories today. According to Lee J. Stone, “Strawberry” was one of three best quarterbacks he ever coached. The former “Mr. Blue Comet” passed away in 1997.
Ronnie Winslow Class of 1962 (2009)
An outstanding performer, Ronnie excelled in both football and wrestling. He was a member of the 1960 WNCHSAA football champions and during his senior year was named to the All-State team and played in both the East/West and Shrine Bowl All-Star games. Mr. Winslow also was undefeated and won the state championships in the heavyweight division as a senior. Ronnie attended Duke University on a football scholarship and continued his career at Guilford College where he was selected to the Little All-America Team. Mr. Winslow resides in Ridgefield, Washington.
MORRIS WHITSON, COACH (2008)
Morris Whitson was an outstanding role model and coach for the students of the Asheboro city schools. From 1961 to the late 1990’s, Coach Whitson was the king of tennis in Asheboro. He coached many outstanding players and teams during his thirty plus years as a coach and director of tennis for the city of Asheboro. Coach was an educator, a driver education teacher, an assistant principal, a youth baseball coach, a father to many, and a devoted husband. His many achievements and honors are numerous. Coach Whitson passed away in October 2003.
Tim Woodle Class of 1988 (2009)
Tim Woodle was an outstanding football player, wrestler, and track performer at Asheboro High School. A two time All-Conference performer in football, the “Wolfman” played in the East-West All-Star game and was named Honorable Mention All-State in wrestling. Mr. Woodle also found time to be a member of 1987 4x100 state champion relay team and finished third in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes in the state meet. This 1988 winner of the Asheboro High School Student of the Year continued his education and playing at Elon University. He was a leading tackler for three years while earning All-Conference honors. He has coached in both the Randolph County School System and Asheboro City School System. A devoted family man, Tim currently works with the Charlotte- Mecklenburg School System as the Supervisor of the Transportation System and also officiates high school football.
Elvin York (Class of 1962) (2010)
Elvin York may be the finest wrestler at Asheboro High School. Under the direction of Coach Jim Hurst, Elvin was a two-time individual state champion and two-time WNCHSAA champion in 1961 and 1962. He had a forty-two match win streak and was undefeated as a junior. This Beta Club member helped lead the Blue Comet mat men to 2nd and 3rd place team finishes (WNCHSAA). Elvin graduated from N.C. State in 1964 and was undefeated as a collegiate until academic scheduling forced him to retire from the sport. Mr. York served as a production control manager for Harrelson Rubber Company for thirty-three years. He resides in Ramseur, NC.
JAMES YORK, CLASS OF 1951 (2004)
James “Brother” York was an outstanding athlete at AHS from 1947 to 1951. An All-State performer in both football and basketball, he was also an excellent baseball player. He was selected to play in both the Shrine Bowl and the East/West All-Star games in football. York received a football scholarship to Duke University. He passed away in 1997, but will be recognized as one of the greatest athletes in Asheboro High School history.
